Shih-Tzu

Known as the Chinese Lion Dog, the Shih-Tzu is actually one of the oldest breeds of dog in human history, and holds a place of high regard in Asia, as a favorite breed of Chinese royalty. This is a smaller dog, with a regal look, and if you’ve got the right temperament, this gorgeous, distinctive “Chrysanthemum-faced dog” may be the right one for you!

The Royal Treatment

If you’re looking at Shih Tzu puppies to bring one into your home, make sure that you’re a good match for what this breed needs. The Shih Tzu is a purebred dog, meaning this can be quite a valuable, expensive purchase. It’s a smaller dog, so if you live in an apartment or condo, the more confined space will be just fine.

Because of its small size, a Shih Tzu dog, even fully grown, is going to be somewhat delicate. While it is a good family dog, it’s advisable to either bring it in when your children are older and have a better understanding of delicate handling or closely supervise your very young children. Even a toddler can unintentionally injure a Shih Tzu through improper contact, and that would be traumatic for everyone, especially the dog.

At Home In Your Home

The Shih Tzu is a friendly, if somewhat vocal dog, especially when it comes to strangers outside your home. You can expect a bit of barking when your Shih Tzu knows that someone is outside, but once they come in and “submit themselves for approval,” they go right back to being friendly, inquisitive dogs.

The Shih Tzu is also a real lap dog, and that is the happiest place for this small pet to be. However, being a smaller dog, with a shorter, rounder face, the Shih Tzu does not do so well in heat. For Florida owners, this means keeping the dog in air conditioned environments. Leaving it out in the hot, tropical heat for too long may hurt your pet.

It is the fur of the Shih Tzu that is the pride and joy of many owners. This is a royal dog, after all, and with proper maintenance, can certainly look the part. The silky, shiny fur of the Shih Tzu looks amazing with proper care. If you want a small, good looking dog that wows everyone with its appearance, you can have that in Shih Tzu puppies, but that means you have to be willing to either groom the dog yourself or pay professionals to do it.

The Shih Tzu is a fantastic choice for people that want a smaller, friendly dog with a unique, show-stopping look. If that’s you, start looking at Shih Tzu puppies!
